This is a term position not to exceed 1 year with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not confer permanent status in the Federal service.
This position is located in the Division of Interpretation at Antietam National Battlefield Park in Sharpsburg, MD.
Antietam National Battlefield covers 3,288 acres in Washington County, Maryland. It liesnorth and east of the small, historic town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, in a rural setting along MD Routes 34 and 65. The nearby cities of Hagerstown, Maryland and Frederick, Maryland, offer all amenities. Antietam National Battlefields approximately 70 miles or 1 1/2 hours from both Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland.
This position directs the daily activities of a fee collection operation at an entrance station and visitor center.Subordinate employees collect and account for fees, disseminate information and provide resource orientation to visitors. As the supervisor, the incumbent personally performs these major duties but also performs supervisory responsibilities for subordinate staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work consists of working in an office, busy visitor center or entrance station.Some moderate physical exertion. Requires walking along trails an paths.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work consist of indoor work and outdoor work. Exposed to small spaces, heat, cold and exhaust fumes from vehicles.

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation Incumbent must wear a National Park Service Uniform Possess and maintain a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license Plans, schedules and assigns work to subordinate staff and provides technical and policy direction. Sets work unit goals in accordance with divisional goals and priorities; motivates employees to increase and/or maintain productivity. Interviews candidates for vacancies, recommends selections, promotions and reassignment of employees. Evaluates work performance of subordinate staff and recommends appropriate awards. Provides advice, counsel and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters. Effects minor disciplinary measures, such as warnings and reprimands, and recommends other action to higher level. Identifies and provides for employee training and developmental needs. Responsibilities include identifying and correcting job safety and health hazards, instructing employees on safety requirements for job assignments, reviewing and reporting loss incidents in accordance with Bureau and Office of Employees' Compensation regulations, initiating corrective measures for violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act standards, and directing the periodic Inspection of all workplaces. Serves as a front-line representative of the National Park Service. Provides current and accurate information to visitors. Explains the area's recreational opportunities, distributes maps, brochures and other printed material. Incumbent provides public orientation and explanations of current park events, resource management projects, management policies and legislative updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Conducts informal talks with visitors concerning the park's resources. Collects fees at park entrance station, visitor center, and other visitor contact station following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, performs opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, park passes and federal recreation passports in accordance with established guidelines, and verifies entrance receipts and passes for valid dates. Completes shift reports. Safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock. Incumbent prepares remittance; reports and bank deposits for funds collected. Maintains accountability records. Troubleshoots accounting problems by correcting difficult errors that are unsolvable by others. The incumbent's supervisory responsibilities include: planning and scheduling work; evaluating work performance; providing advice, counsel and assistance to employees on both work and administrative matters; interviewing applicants and recommending selections for positions in the unit.

Must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience may include: providing a wide variety of support services to enable efficient operation of a Visitor Center or business office. Such as the operation of computerized information systems; tracking and reconciling fiscal data; preparing and following up on purchase orders and contracts and preparing bank deposits.
Time in Grade Requirements: Applicants who have held a nontemporary General Schedule position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade restriction by the closing date of the announcement.
NPS uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
Applicants must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license or District of Columbia driver's license.

Applicant must be able to work alternative work schedules, shift rotations, including night shift, holidays, and weekends.
One year supervisory probationary period may be required.
Incumbent will be required to work outdoors, often under adverse conditions.
